To reduce the company's dependence on climate/weather conditions and to enhance the efficiency of the plant and to improve the quality of the products the company is setting up a few projects to diversify and to broaden the company's field of operation. Also HSL will produce more Bromine to meet the demand/supply gap of liquid bromine in India which is about 50% and require to over come by indigenous production of Liquid Bromine.
Solution Mining Project: Solution Mining of rock salt deposits of 116 million tonnes of salt is available in Drang & Guma Mines in mountain ranges alongside Jogindernagar-Mandi ; and to feed to chlor alkali plant of 60,000 TPA capacity and to set up a refinery.
Expansion of Bromine Plant (900 TPA to 1350 TPA): Estimated demand and supply gap of liquid bromine is approximately equal to the present indigenous production of Liquid Bromine i.e. apprx.6000 TPA and demand of liquid bromine is in increasing trend. To participate in the National productivity and to overcome the gap company decided to increase the capacity of bromine plant from 900 TPA to 1300 TPA.
Industrial Salt Recovery Project at Kharaghoda (R&D): To improve the quality of salt produced from subsoil brine by integrating salt production with Marine Chemical recovery. The process involves desulphatation of dilute brine with Calcium Chloride and producing industrial grade salt by desulphated brine. The formal project is in hand with the help of CSMCRI.
Replacement/Maintenance of Permanent way and purchase of loco: HSL & SSL are having a large area of salt lake and manufacturing area and is well connected with the rail track for the purchase of transportation of salt from manufacturing areas to the central store. The company inherited there old Railway Lines laid almost a century ago from Salt Deptt. These railway lines needs replacement as well as maintenance. Scheme is taken in hand to replace and maintenance of permanent way in phased manner to upkeep the truck for haulage of salt and despatch of salt through railway.
Salt Refining of 1 lakh TPA: The maximum population of India (70%) at present is consuming raw salt and the refined salt but this trend is undergoing major changes and more and more personnels are progressively switching over towards usage of Refined Salt. The demand of refined salt is in increasing trend. SSL is located centrally than Gujarat and company decided to set up a Salt Refinery of capacity 1 lakh TPA at Sambhar Lake to improve the viability of the company and to increase the share of Central Govt. PSE in the field of Refined Salt. It also help to export the salt to the adjacent countries.
Sinking of borewells/Surface wells and development of production area: Against rated capacity of 2 lakh MT of salt production annually at Sambhar Lake, the actual production is dictated by the actual rain fall. The sub soil brine is used as has been the case for last 4 years severe drought for salt production work. To increase the production, company decided to dig 25 Nos. borewells and 50 nos. Surface well, 70% work has been completed.
Upgradation of Iodised Salt Plant at Sambhar: The Micronutrient Initiative, Canada based international repute NGO provided grant assistance of 98 lakh INR to HSL to upgrade the iodised salt plant at Sambhar Lake to manufacture PFA standard good quality iodised salt and to provide to below poverty line people of India on approximately 1/3rd cost being marketed by multinational company. The capacity of the plant is 60,000 TPA.
